Christchurch council takes hard line on recycling rule breakers

Jake Kenny Reporter from Community News

Almost 1500 Christchurch households could soon have their recycling bins confiscated as the city council cracks down on people who refuse to separate their waste.

About 180 yellow wheelie bins have already been removed and the council has sent final warnings to another 1450 residents.

To get the bins back, they will have to pay $97.65 and sign a statement promising to abide by the rules. Their bins will be monitored to make sure they keep that promise.

Christchurch City Council has spent close to $1.5 million sending almost 1500 truckloads of contaminated material from yellow bins to landfill since May. That equates to about 41 per cent of all yellow bins.

Do you agree with council's strict recycling approach? Let us know below.

Hi everyone,
We'd be keen to hear about your favourite foodie finds on your travels through NZ. Have you come across a particularly amazing cafe, bakery restaurant or food truck? Had an especially delicious pie, burger, sandwich, smoothie bowl or cronut? Been to what must be one of the country's best fish and chip joints? Or been pleasantly surprised by a town's food scene? Please share the details below and include 'NFP' (not for publication) in your comment if you don't want it included in an article. Cheers.

Linda from Parklands - Marshlands

Dallington's Hand Craft Shop has either been taken or got loose in this wind today. If you have seen it please, please do let us know. The flag is new and has really helped lift custom for our tiny community shop. Our volunteers are sad so please anyone help put their smile back on. See photo
