Royal Oak Hedgehog Rescue

Monique from Royal Oak

Safe home wanted for Stumpy the hedgehog.
Stumpy’s Story.
I am a little male hedgehog, my mummy was killed on a busy road I ran away scared, sad, lost and alone. I got very, hungry and ran about trying to find food all night and morning until I was exhausted.

While looking for food, I got both my back feet caught in some fencing mesh. I was trapped for a very long time, getting hungrier and hungrier. I knew I would soon die if I could not get out of this mesh fence netting. I started to chew the mesh, then had to bite off some of my toes to get free.
I tried to the search for some food, but was so weak, with bleeding sore feet, hungry, with some mange too. It was very long cold night. By morning I was totally exhausted. I sat down on the cold wet grass too weak to walk any more.
A man came along at long last and found me lying still and barely alive. He took me at once to Monique at Royal Oak Hedgehog Rescue. Monique has named me “Stumpy”.
Monique warmed me up on a heat pad and hand fed me warm electrolytes, as I was very so dehydrated and thin. Then she carefully cleaned my sore bleeding feet and used antiseptic (Tea Tree Oil) to put on them. I was given electrolyte mix every 3-4 hours and ‘Panacur’ medicine, and special ‘superlac’ milk to help me gain weight. Monique has been hand feeding me for over two months.

I am now well enough to eat and drink by myself again. I can eat a lot of Biscuits and Jellymeat which are very nice but I want to go free to find my own food now. I feel so much better and have gained lots of weight.

My back feet have healed nicely but my most of my toes are gone.
Would some nice human help look after me by making sure I can get to some food and fresh water each night. With only part of 2 toes on one back leg and stumps on the other I need to find a safe fully enclosed garden to live in. Contact Monique if you think you can help look after me in a few weeks when I am ready to be released. 0210350634

Christmas Eve busiest shopping day of the year with more than 500,000 sales

Brian from Mount Roskill

Busiest shopping day of the year
Peak time 12 noon-1 pm - 563,303 transactions
Per second peak - 167 transactions
========================================
Number of sales beats Black Friday, but lowest Christmas Eve in six years
Christmas Eve has been the busiest shopping day of the year with 9,745 sales a minute at its peak.
Payments company Worldline says noon to 1pm saw 563,303 sales recorded on its network, down by about 7 percent on a year ago.
The company's network covers about three-quarters of the electronic terminals in operation.
Worldline did not have a dollar value for spending, but the peak number of transactions was the lowest for the past six years and well shy of the record 679,436 in 2019, before the pandemic.
Earlier this month it noted rising sales in the first three weeks of the month, but they remained 1.3 percent lower than 2024, with most parts of the country trailing the previous year's spending.
Official data from Stats NZ to the end of November showed a small rise in spending on the previous month, to 1.6 percent higher for the year.
Retail spending has been subdued as households have remained cautious because of high prices and a slow benefit from lower interest rates, and as well as concerns about the soft labour market.
However, recent surveys have shown improving consumer sentiment with ANZ bank's monthly report showing confidence at its highest level in four years.
Boxing Day is traditionally the country's favourite shopping day, but with Black Friday spending also softer this year the amount going through retailers' terminals may also be down on a year ago.
Adding a dampener to consumer spending may be the recent rises in longer term fixed mortgage rates because of higher wholesale rates.
