More families will also qualify, as we have lifted the income threshold.
These changes will apply for fees paid from 1 July 2025.
This will come as a welcome relief for families with young children who are doing it tough with everyday costs.
If you have young children, I encourage you to go onto the Inland Revenue’s website to see if your family is eligible.

All self-employed people, including contractors and sole traders, can claim expenses against their income.

Brian from Mount Roskill

vehicle expenses, transport costs and travel for business purposes

What you can claim for
Business expenses can include:
==========================
vehicle expenses, transport costs and travel for business purposes
rent paid on business premises
depreciation on items like computers and office furniture
interest on borrowing money for the business
some insurance premiums
work-related journals and magazines
membership of professional associations
home office expenses
work-related mobile phones and phone bills
stationery
work uniforms
tax agent’s fees.
===============
If you own an investment property, expenses you can claim for include:
=========================================================
repairs and maintenance (but not renovations that substantially improve the value of the property)
professional services fees, like accountants, lawyers or property managers
rates and insurance
mortgage repayment insurance
vehicle and travel expenses when you travel to inspect your property or do repairs
depreciation on capital expenses, like whiteware, appliances or heat pumps
legal fees involved in buying a rental property, as long as the expense is $10,000 or less.
How much can you claim?
=====================
You can't claim the whole cost of all items, even those only for business use. Some things you can only claim half for, eg some entertainment expenses. You can only claim 100% of the cost for an expense that’s entirely for business use.
If you have an expense that’s partly for your business and partly for your private use, you can claim the proportion that relates to your business.
Example:
If you spend half the time driving a vehicle to deliver goods and the other half for your own reasons, you can claim 50% of the travel costs for your business.
For some expenses, like business entertainment, eg client meals and staff functions, you can only claim half.
Working from home
================
If you use an area of your home for your business, eg your study or garage, you can claim a portion of the household expenses, eg:
rates
power
house and contents insurance
mortgage interest if you own the home
rent if you are renting the home.
You must keep invoices for these expenses.
How it works
===========
If your home is 100 square metres and your working space is 10 square metres — 10% of the total area — you can claim 10% of expenses that are not solely for your business, eg your home phone line.
If you aren't using a separate area of your home for business, you'll need to take into account how much time you spend on your business and the area used.
If you're GST registered, the GST content on home office expenses can be claimed as they’re paid — in each GST return period — or at the end of your tax year. Mortgage interest and rent don’t include GST.

The first trailer would begin operating in Auckland, the New Zealand Transport Agency said.
Nine more trailers were set to join the fleet over the coming months.
They would join the 34 mobile cameras already operating out of SUVs.
NZTA said that with the trailers, mobile cameras would be operating for a total of 6500 hours a month.
"The camera technology in trailers is the same as we’re using in our SUVs, but having both vehicle types gives us more flexibility to move cameras between high-risk locations quickly and easily, ensuring that we are targeting stretches of road where speeding drivers are putting themselves and others at risk," said Tara Macmillan, NZTA head of regulatory strategic programmes.
Macmillan said the trailers would allow NZTA to have its cameras out for longer stretches of time and in places the SUVs could not access.
"Both our trailers and SUVs will be working day and night, detecting speeding wherever and whenever it occurs.
“Speeding drivers can cause serious and irreparable harm on the roads, including deaths and serious injuries. Evidence shows that we can reduce the chances of people being killed or seriously injured in crashes if drivers travel within speed limits, and that is why we have safety cameras.”
The trailers, like the SUVs, won't be sign posted, and can detect speeding vehicles from either side of the road.
They can also detect speeding vehicles that are travelling both towards and away from them.
NZTA has sole responsibility for operating speed cameras - police will still issue notices for any offences they detect.

After 50 years without a sighting, the rare and quirky sailback houndshark has finally been spotted again in Papua New Guinea!

Because it’s been seen so rarely, scientists still know very little about it. But its striking features are already sparking debate about whether it should be given special protection, and some have even argued it could become an icon species for Papua New Guinea.

At a time when we so often hear about species disappearing, the return of this little shark is a reminder that nature can surprise us ... and that there’s always reason to hope.

You can read more about the sailback shark here

We hope this brings a smile!

A Doctor in Gaza: Come along for a talk by Dr Alan Kerr about his and his wife Hazel's experiences, as volunteers, during 40 visits to the Occupied Territories of Israel between 2001 and 2019. All welcome.

Date: Monday 6 Oct 2025
Time: 2pm
Venue: St Andrews Church Hall, 100 St Andrews Rd, Epsom
Parking: Available on the right-hand side of the long driveway; there is further angle parking near the hall.

Bio:
Following surgical training in Wellington, Auckland and the University of Alabama, Alan was a full time Cardiothoracic and Vascular surgeon at Green Lane Hospital from 1970 until his retirement in 2002.

Initially, he had a major role in the development of surgery for coronary artery disease in NZ, and later, following the retirement of Sir Brian Barratt-Boyes, he became the lead heart surgeon for NZ children.

In Palestine, he was often accompanied by a volunteer team of ex-colleagues from the Starship Hospital, and together they operated on 750 children from West Bank and Gaza. Teaching and training of local staff was a focus, and with international and Israeli collaboration, a fully Independent Palestinian service was developed at the Makassed Hospital in East Jerusalem.

NB. This meeting will be the last formal meeting before the EEDHS deregisters as an incorporated society early next year. At the Oct meeting, the EEDHS will be taking a vote by its members as to which local historical society the EEDHS will entrust with its assets.
