We Say/You Say: Should the Hauraki Gulf be protected?

Abby Irwin Reporter from Western Leader

Kia ora neighbours,

A new poll released by the Hauraki Gulf Forum has found there is overwhelming public support for more measures to protect and restore the Hauraki Gulf/Tīkapa Moana.

Of over 1000 respondents, 81% said they love and have a very strong attachment to the Gulf, including its beaches, shorelines and islands. The greatest public concerns for the health of the Gulf are plastics (73% of respondents said this had the most negative impact), sewage (72%), chemicals (70%), and commercial fishing (63%).

Methods proposed to protect the Gulf include planting all waterways, re-establishing lost shellfish-beds and reefs, and banning fishing methods such as dredging and bottom-trawling that damage the sea-floor. 84% of respondents supported these actions, with less than 3% in opposition.

Do you love being in/around the Gulf, and do you think it should be protected? Share your thoughts below and don't forget to type NFP if you don't want your comment featured in the conversations section of the Western Leader.

😲🔎Where have all the groups gone?🔍😲

Fiona from Henderson

When Neighbourly started and for such a long time, all of the groups within the individual Neighbourhoods could be seen.
One could go through and see all the new groups, interests, conversations etc .. with the exception of the closed groups.

Now? well … I'm scratching my head and have double checked everything and can only see the groups that I belong to, nothing more.
Well, that not quite true, it does suggest I may like to join a parents group in Green Bay and it even suggests I want to join my very own group - the cheek if it 😄😄

I'm fully aware that they were testing a new format a while ago, but this isn't working.
How can we expand our knowledge, learn new things, meet new people who have the same interests etc … if we can't see ALL of the groups in our Neighbourhood?

Does anyone have a clue or an answer or anything to solve this annoying problem here on Neighbourly?
Maybe one of the Leads out there in the big ol' neighbourhood will be able to answer my question or maybe someone has already asked the question and has the answer and could share it with us.

Are you happy about the loss of 8,000 planted native seedlings?

Todd Niall Reporter from Community News

Kia ora Neighbours, A contested decision by politicians on the Upper Harbour Local Board to mow down 8,000 native plants and young trees, could bring a hefty bill. Council staff reject that there was a mistake in the planting, and now there could be a big bill. What do you think ?
