Major leak' forces large Auckland pool complex to part close
16:19, Dec 13 2018
Pools at West Wave Pool and Leisure Centre have been shut due to a leak.
A major overnight leak in one of Auckland's biggest public pools has stopped swimming, just a few weeks into the busy summer period.
West Wave Pool and Leisure Centre, the only public pool servicing West Auckland, leaked and flooded the wave pool area, plant room and main reception.
As a result, the wave pool, paddling pool, family and adult spa areas were closed off to repair the damage.
Henderson-Massey Local Board chairman Shane Henderson said the "major leak" and the subsequent closure of the pool was "unacceptable".
"West Auckland only has one public pool," Henderson said
Henderson-Massey Local Board chair Shane Henderson says the pool's closure was unacceptable.
"When there are problems, there are no local options for our residents in the busy summer period."
The facility often saw queues outside at peak times.
Henderson, a regular user of the facility with his young family, said he was expecting a lot of frustrated members of the public.

The fitness centre, lane pool, learner pool and dive pool remained open but there was limited access to the changing rooms.
Henderson said he was told the wave pool and children's areas could be closed for at least the weekend, and up to two weeks.
"We are talking around 200,000 people without access to a local public pool in summer."
The local board had been pushing for a new pool facility in the area but was told by Auckland Council not to expect one for the next 10 years.
A pool was prioritised for the Whau area instead.
Henderson said the major leak incident has made the board's case for a new pool stronger.
"We appreciate the public's understanding as the West Wave staff work through this difficult time," he said.
"This is a situation no-one expected or wanted, an unforeseen fault that has required quick work to minimise damage. Staff are working hard to get access back to the whole facility as soon as possible."
