Be wary of door knocker claiming to fix smoke alarms
There have been recent incidents where a male knocks on doors stating he is from a company and he is here to check smoke alarms. He wears a reflective vest, and may even purport to have an ID card. He comes across as very plausible. Once he is let inside the house, he looks around for opportunity to steal. Usually he grabs a handbag and takes off. He appears to target elderly people, but may not be limited to doing that.
Police advise residents to check through a window before opening their door to anyone. If in doubt about the person, do not answer your door, if they continue to bother you and you are concerned ring 111. If you talk to the person and they say they want to come inside and check your smoke alarms – refuse the offer, shut the door and if possible ring 111 as soon as possible to advise of this incident. You do not have to let anybody inside your home, no matter what they ask of you.

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?
Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
