The current water issues DO affect you.

Cathy McIntosh from Waitematā Local Board

If we don't save more water this month, we face having to boil our drinking water. No one wants to do that. Please reduce your water usage now.

Aucklanders have missed the daily water savings target of 400 million litres for the second day in a row, having used 409 million litres yesterday.

Water savings target missed for a second day
Watercare says all Aucklanders need to continue to save at least 20 litres of water per person, per day.

“Auckland has demonstrated that we can reduce our water consumption without significant inconvenience.

"But as the weather improves and the weekend’s storms become a distant memory we run the risk of forgetting the need to reduce water use,” says Raveen Jaduram, Watercare chief executive officer.

Businesses on board

Businesses have begun supporting the water saving efforts, says Mr Jaduram.

“We welcome Z and Caltex closing their commercial car washes across Auckland in an effort to reduce water use and encourage other businesses to follow their lead,” adds Jaduram.

Auckland Transport has asked its maintenance contractors to limit water use and to carry out water blasting only if there are hygeine issues.

"We expect that this could save thousands of litres a week," says Tony McCartney, Group Manager Assets and Maintenance.

"As a result, some facilities may be a little grubby, but this is for the greater good of all Aucklanders."

Silt still an issue

Ardmore Water Treatment Plant is still working at half its usual capacity as it deals with silt in the main catchment supply (Hunua dams).

Other water treatment plants at Waitakere, Huia and Onehunga are working harder than normal to keep Aucklanders supplied with A-grade quality water.

If consumption soars to last week’s levels of around 460 million litres a day, partially treated water will need to be released into the network and a boil water notice will be issued.

Jaduram said Watercare is doing everything it can to avoid a boil water notice, including increasing capacity at all treatment plants at sustainable levels.
