With all the rain lately, I’ve noticed cars around Auckland can lose their shine pretty quickly. Thought I’d share a few simple car paint care tips that might help:

1️⃣ After rain, give your car a quick rinse
We can’t avoid the rain here, but what really harms the paint is letting dirty rainwater dry on the surface. A quick rinse or wipe-down after a rainy day helps prevent water spots and slow down rust.

2️⃣ Clean off bird droppings fast
They’re acidic and, if left too long, can leave permanent marks on the paint.

3️⃣ Be careful parking under trees
Leaves, sap and dust can leave stains, and wiping them off too roughly can scratch the surface.

✨ Quick tip: Even if your car doesn’t look dirty, giving it a basic clean every couple of weeks really helps protect the paint and keeps it looking newer for longer.

After 50 years without a sighting, the rare and quirky sailback houndshark has finally been spotted again in Papua New Guinea!

Because it’s been seen so rarely, scientists still know very little about it. But its striking features are already sparking debate about whether it should be given special protection, and some have even argued it could become an icon species for Papua New Guinea.

At a time when we so often hear about species disappearing, the return of this little shark is a reminder that nature can surprise us ... and that there’s always reason to hope.

An offender allegedly single-handedly responsible for $90,000 in retail crime offending has been arrested in an operation.

Police made the arrest late last week as part of a prevention operation at Lynnmall. The 25-year-old man was located by the Area Prevention Unit who were working during late night shopping on Thursday.

Inspector Kelly Farrant, Area Prevention Manager for Waitematā West, says the man is facing 26 shoplifting charges and two burglary charges.
“The man was a person of interest in our operation and was spotted by staff just after 7.30pm, as he was wanted in connection with around $90,000 in offending.”

The charges relate to shoplifting and burglary charges in Mt Albert, Henderson, Auckland and New Lynn between April and September 2025.

“This is the result of great teamwork, intuition and planning,” Inspector Farrant says. “Our Area Prevention team will continue running operations that protect hard working business owners from the devastating and costly consequences of retail crime.”

Research published this year has demonstrated that playing music helps keep dementia at bay - no matter how late in life the skill is picked up.

The basic idea behind this research is not new - we know that 'cognitive reserve' (learning new things) plays a big role in delaying mental slowdown. But the reminder that "it is never too late" is welcome ...

We hope this news brings a smile!
