Hey neighbours, are you thinking of borrowing money by taking out a loan?

Before you do - there's a few things you really need to know about. Take a minute and read the tips below to ensure you're asking the right questions and getting the best loan for you.

1. Shop around! Interest rates, fees and terms must be made available to you by the lender. Make sure you compare details and make an informed decision about what loan is best for you.

2. Choose a lender. Did you know that when you borrow money to buy something, you don’t have to borrow from the same person who is selling the goods?

3. Understand. Whoever is loaning you the money must ask questions to make sure you can afford the loan. They also need to help you understand the key terms of the loan.

4. Be prepared. You'll need to provide your lender with information to show that you can afford to repay the loan. This might include proof of income and expenses so make sure you have it ready.

Don't get on Auntie's bad side and do your research! You can find more information here.

People needing surgery were mistakenly left off waiting lists at one of the country's biggest DHBs

Auckland DHB only realised there was a problem when one of the affected patients contacted them about their referral. The DHB carried out urgent work to clinically assess the patients and said none came to harm because of the delays. All surgeries had since been booked. Most cases were in 2017 but the DHB would not confirm how long patients had been left off waiting lists or what surgeries they needed. The problem was discovered in April - indicating some patients could have been delayed for more than a year. An automatic report is run as a back-up to identify any patients mistakenly left off waiting lists, but failed to do so in the 44 cases. ADHB chief medical officer Dr Margaret Wilsher said delays were taken very seriously."We know this can cause anxiety for our patients and their families. In this case, when we discovered a cohort of 44 patients had waited much longer than usual to be booked in for surgery we contacted these patients as a priority to schedule their treatment. "A clinical review showed none of these patients suffered harm as a result of the delay. We have put additional checks and validations in place and continue to look into the issue."Wilsher encouraged any patient concerned at the length of time they had waited for a surgical appointment to talk to their GP or contact the health board directly.
Health Minister David Clark said he was made aware of the issue this week."I'm advised the DHB says at this stage it appears no patients have suffered harm as a result of this error...I'm expecting to be updated as the DHB investigates this matter further."Ian Powell, executive director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, said the error was serious."I would imagine that the people who discovered it, their hearts would have stopped momentarily."There may well have been an enhanced risk of harm, but it would appear that didn't materialise."
Powell said the oversight highlighted the risk to patients of things going wrong with the IT systems used by health boards and professionals."It is a bit scary...IT systems in public hospitals are often the thing that causes immense frustration for specialists. It is not confined to Auckland at all, it is sadly quite universal." In May we reported on tensions between some of Auckland DHB's surgical teams, with some staff demanding an urgent sea change in culture.

Top 10 student loan borrowers owe more than $370k each-- - and they've all fled the country.

The impact of student loans on students and their education has become a major political issue. Education Minister Chris Hipkins says a student loan debt is something the Government "is aiming to tackle" with its policy of one-year fee-free study for students new to tertiary education. He says the Government plans to extend fee-free education out to three years over time, with the next free year planned to be added in 2020. The Government plans to make two years of university free by 2021, and three years free by 2024. The fee-free policy is expected to cost $340 million a year, and the increase to student support a further $270 million a year. But this is no help to students who already have loans and are struggling with repayments swollen by interest and penalties. Statistics from 2016 show around 112,390 student borrowers live overseas, with an estimated $3.25 billion of debt, and 70 percent are behind in their loan repayments. Since 2010 the Government has been increasing its efforts to make them repay. The IRD has been cracking down on the overseas borrowers who attempt to re-enter the country. That includes the controversial arrest of Ngatokotoru Puna in 2016. The nephew of the Cook Islands Prime Minister became the first man to be arrested for ignoring requests to repay his student loan, after being targeted at Auckland Airport over his $120,000-plus loan. He had to borrow $5000 from his parents get his passport back and get the case against him dropped. "We tried to engage with the customer on numerous occasions by phone, email and letter and he's failed to engage with us, and it got to the point where we've decided to use our powers in the most judicious way and arrest him as he tried to leave the country," an IRD collections manager, Stuart Duff, told at the time. He's not the only one, with other borrowers arrested trying to leave the country over student loan debt. According to the IRD, arrests at the border are used as a "very last resort" and only follow strenuous efforts to contact a borrower. The New Zealand Union of Students' Association (NZUSA) has criticised the IRD's actions, and calls for better support and repayment conditions for overseas-based borrowers."It breeds fear and forces people to never return. This is damaging to our reputation as a nation," a spokesperson told after the arrests. "Instead of using legislation to make them criminals, the rules should be used to support borrowers to make repayments."

It is a little bit of time just for you to explore Yoga and your re-connection to your body, mind and breath. The integration of these aspects of ourselves allows us to connect to our inner, deeper wisdom and to be peaceful in the world around us.

But this type of work when done on our own, takes effort, consistency and commitment. It is a great start to attend a regular class, where the group’s energy and dynamics can support and motivate your own personal practice. We invite you to join us on this journey!

In our classes, we will work though the foundation postures (asana) and simple breathing practices (pranayama) plus some basic philosophy to help get a feel for what Yoga is all about. There is a big emphasis on how to work with your particular body, rather than you trying to fit into a particular postural shape. You don't need to be flexible, coordinated or strong, these are some of the great benefits of practicing, not prerequisites. Our goal as facilitators is to support you in being able to remember the principles of the class off the mat and begin to apply them to everyday life.

When: Mondays, 6:30pm - 7:30pm
Where: The Art of Living Centre, 93 Lansford Cres, Avondale
Cost: Casual Classes: $10 & 10x Class Pass: $90
