๐ŸŽ„ Christmas 2025 Holiday Pay - What You Need to Know ๐ŸŽ„

Stephanie from Sunnynook

๐ŸŽ„ Christmas 2025 Holiday Pay - What NZ Employers Need to Know ๐ŸŽ„
With Christmas fast approaching, itโ€™s important to make sure your team is paid correctly over the holiday period - especially with holiday legislation changes on the horizon.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Good news: For Christmas 2025, the current Holidays Act rules still apply.

Hereโ€™s a simple breakdown ๐Ÿ‘‡
โœ… Employees with 12+ months service
โ€ข Entitled to 4 weeks paid annual leave
โ€ข Pay the higher of:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Ordinary Weekly Pay or Average Weekly Earnings
๐Ÿ“Œ Full-time example
โ€ข 8 hrs/day ร— 5 days = 40 hrs/week
โ€ข $1,200 per week = $240 per leave day
๐Ÿ“Œ Part-time example
โ€ข 3 hrs/day ร— 4 days = 12 hrs/week
โ€ข $300 per week = $75 per leave day
โœ… Employees with less than 12 months service
โ€ข Not yet entitled to annual leave
โ€ข If your business closes down over Christmas, they must still be paid holiday pay for the closedown period (usually paid via payroll accruals or 8% of gross earnings under current law)
๐ŸŽ Christmas & New Year Public Holidays
โ€ข Christmas Day (25 Dec)
โ€ข Boxing Day (26 Dec)
โ€ข New Yearโ€™s Day (1 Jan)
โœ”๏ธ If the day is a normal working day, employees are paid for it
โœ”๏ธ If they work on a public holiday:
โžก๏ธ Time and a half + an alternative paid day off
๐Ÿ”” Important โ€“ Changes Coming
The Holidays Act will eventually be replaced by a new Employment Leave Act, moving to hours-based leave accrual and simplified calculations.
โš ๏ธ These changes are not in force yet, so Christmas 2025 still follows current rules.
