Overrun by animals, the Auckland SPCA is asking for foster families to take on farm animals including horses, goats and chickens. From June to September this year, 20 farm animals have been fostered. There are more farm animals ready to go, but there are no homes for them to go to.

"Our foster parents are volunteers and provide a temporary home for animals to help them recover from surgery, give them medicine for an illness, or work with them to improve their behaviour," the spokesperson says. "We are looking for foster parents who have enough secure land and shelter to house farm animals, and high enough fencing - especially for goats - to keep them safe."

Typically, foster parents will look after an animal from a few weeks up to a few months, or sometimes longer. The Auckland centre has very limited room, and farm animals need more space.

"Farm animals need lots of room and land to be happy, healthy and express natural behaviours, and there is simply not enough room at the Auckland centre to give them this - especially when we have a high number of animals in our care."

Fostering is free, and SPCA supplies food, vet treatment and support for the foster family. For more information head to the SPCA's website.

Students inspire environmental design

Communications Team from Auckland Council

The students picked up their pencils and Play-Doh and sketched and sculpted designs of how they would like their restored reserve to look. The designs were largely inspired by nature and the surrounding landscape and the native species the Healthy Waters team was trying to attract back.

Kia ora folks.
I have just received a visit from a young lady asking for a minute of my time to show me some art for a "local community art exposure". Being an art teacher, I was all about it and agreed to participate. I knew something was definitely not right when she attributed one art work to the wrong artist but of a similar style. Unfortunately and not surprisingly, it became a sales call and had very little to do with enriching the community. The girl, I'm guessing on a working holiday seemed quite harmless and had a very pleasant approach. Yet she followed a script that was highly manipulative and included information that I believe to be false. Part of this script stated that the artworks are made by people who have recently finished art school from countries all around the world. I have traveled a bit in my life and know these paintings are done in villages in China and parts of South East Asia. The works are usually sold to tourists for around $40 depending on your negotiation skills. I do not wish to deprive these artists an income, but I object to the dishonesty and manipulative strategies employed by this business. When I said I didn't want to buy anything, the guilt was laid on thick and fast- "it's awful being out on a night like this, I hope I sell something" etc etc. I think it's all part of their training and designed to make you buy something.
I do not wish to deter anyone from purchasing these if you genuinely like the works, but I want people to get the whole picture and not get sucked in by the word "community" being used to gain trust.

Hi neighbours,

Have you heard this trick before? A handy hack on how to open OXO cubes is causing a stir online, as it seems many of us have been doing it all wrong.

Forget crumbling up the cube after opening the silver foil packaging - it seems that packaging was actually designed to be flattened. To read more click here.

Simply open up the flaps on the side, flatten them out and then crumble the cube inside the package, turning it into a powder that's a heck of a lot easier to add to your dish.

Did you know this handy trick? Have you been opening the cubes the wrong way your whole life like the rest of us? Will this make cooking for your family a little easier? Share your thoughts in the replies below!
