Hi neighbours, my name is Caroline and I'm going to be covering news on the North Shore temporarily while our other reporter works on another project.

A bit about me: I moved to Auckland from Palmerston North in 2018 to cover news for the Rodney Times. I've been on Stuff's breaking news team since early 2019. I live in Albany and will split my time between Stuff's Ponsonby and Takapuna offices. I enjoy writing about crime, social issues and anything funny, weird or wacky.

If there is anything you think Stuff should be reporting on or investigating, I'd love to hear from you. Feel free to message me via Neighbourly, Facebook (link below) or flick me an email at caroline.williams@stuff.co.nz

A 72-year-old woman who leads a community patrol on the North Shore is being commended for her work in the community.

Jane Hunter has been a part of the North Habour Community Patrol for 14 years, serving as the eyes and ears of the police.

Hunter is a finalist in the Westfield Local Hero community grants competition, which recognised and promotes community role models.

“I felt very honoured to be put forward by the North Harbour community as a local hero,” Hunter said.

“That in itself is a huge tick for the time that I’ve spent with the patrol.”

North Harbour Community Patrol monitors 30 suburbs, and is currently in “desperate” need of volunteers.

“We only have one vehicle. If I’m announced as the winner, we’ll have sufficient money to be able to get a second vehicle,” Hunter said.

The winner of the competition is decided by a vote, and will receive a grant of $10,000.

Hunter said a big part of the community patrol was maintaining a visible presence, so that locals know that there are people looking out for them.

“We monitor for stolen vehicles and people who are of interest to the police,” she said.

“We also help with search and rescues, and do public events for the police.”

Westfield Local Heroes is in its third iteration with 126 grants on offer across New Zealand and Australia.

Auckland-based charity The Mums' Clique is getting more than 100 requests per day for its essential items packs and Plunket has noted more babies are developing wounds from being left in nappies for long periods because their parents can’t afford to buy more.

Greetings Neighbours 🙏
I am looking for organically grown cabbage to make sauerkraut. Due to Level 3 our regular takapuna markets and other farmers markets are closed. Organic shops don't seem to have any cabbage. So asking if anyone has surplus they are willing to barter or sell. I have purple mustard greens in my garden can give you plants of those, also have calendula flower plants, mugwort (bitter medicinal herb, great as a hedge or for borders). Also have seeds of carrots, radish, variety of leafy greens to swap/give.
Also open to take what you have surplus and can't use and give some money in exchange or barter as above.
Thank you

Auckland will remain in lockdown until Sunday, a four-day extension of the lockdown which was meant to lift on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said there were promising signs that the Government was getting on top of the virus, but a short extension was recommended by director-general of health Ashley Bloomfield.

On Sunday night Auckland would move down to level 2. The rest of the country would stay at level 2.

Ardern said the rest of the country needed to stay at an elevated alert level to mitigate the risk of cases leaving Auckland when interregional travel resumed. Click here to read more.
