Inside the South Island's biggest dump

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from Northern Outlook

Nestled away among green hills and native bush in quiet North Canterbury lies a massive, busy, but slick operation. You wouldn't know it was there unless you went looking for it, and you can't hear it or smell it, even upon arrival at the front gate.

But it is where 4.3 million tonnes of waste has been buried away from sight over the past 14 years. Some is as deep as 50 metres, but the end result looks like rolling pasture.

The service, run by regional council Environment Canterbury (ECan), is to be overhauled in a plan that will contribute to a planned 9.8 per cent rates increase – almost double what was previously forecast.
