Chicken dumping on the rise in North Canterbury
It's not just dogs and cats that get abandoned as the festive season approaches – chickens are also being dumped on roadsides, fords and reserves across North Canterbury.
North Canterbury Chicken Rescue founder Manda Gill says the volunteer group receives the most complaints about abandoned chickens between November and March.
People abandon them for various reasons, but mainly because the chicks turn out to be roosters.
"I think everything deserves a fair shot at life," she says.
Some Choice News!
Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
