The trial, starting on Thursday (February 14), is a joint initiative by the Cancer Society, the Canterbury District Health Board and the Hanmer Springs Community Board, with support from the Hurunui District Council.
Cancer Society health promotion adviser Cheryl Ford says people are already asked not to smoke in the town's parks, playgrounds and reserves.
The trial will add to that initiative by encouraging people to keep key public spaces such as the main street, Amuri Ave and Conical Hill Rd both smokefree and vapefree.

BDC has considered various option's and negotiated with the owners on our behalf to no avail. We as a community need to have our say and input now our elect representatives have walked away from any deal. The silo's remain an iconic part of our town and waterfront and we should consider possible use's and negotiate to retain ownership before they are reduced to rubble. Is it to late, "NO WAY" and would welcome feedback from all camps with the view to calling a public meeting within the next week.
