‘Tis the season to not get scammed ...

As Christmas gift shopping moves increasingly online, scammers are ramping up their activity across the country.

Dunedin’s Investigation Support Unit is seeing more and more people fall victim to scams and other fraudulent activity, particularly on Facebook Marketplace.

There are a few ways to avoid the scams and keep yourself safe doing online trades this holiday season, says Southern District Service Delivery Manager Senior Sergeant Dalton.
🔒 “A good first step when looking to purchase something on Marketplace is to check when the seller’s Facebook profile was created. If it’s very recent, there is a higher risk that they have just created this account for a one-off fake item.”
🔒 Another important step is to make sure the seller’s profile name and bank account name match up. “We’re seeing a lot of scammers claiming their bank account name is different because it belongs to their partner or family member - that’s a huge red flag."
🔒 “When you’re selling, never trust a screenshot anyone sends you showing that payment has been made. Check your own bank account to make sure a payment has gone through."
🔒 “Quite frankly, it’s best for all parties to agree to pay, or be paid, for items in cash and in-person. Ideally in a public place with CCTV coverage."
🔒 "If you’re buying a car, check Carjam.co.nz to see if it’s stolen or if there’s money owed on it.”

A reminder: Suspicious activity can be reported on 105

Hi everyone!

My name is Harry and I’m a trained manual therapist who’s just moved back home to Canterbury.

I received my Diploma in Remedial Massage Therapy in Sydney, Australia and have been working on expanding my toolbox of therapeutic and corrective modalities ever since. I focus my energy on concepts that work and create marked, lasting change quickly and effectively.

I use anatomical assessment, careful planning, therapeutic intervention and personalised rehabilitation programs to address clients' pain and physical dysfunction. Whether your complaint stems from muscles, connective tissue, fascia or systemic dysfunction - I will investigate your presenting condition, perform a root cause analysis, treat the cause (not just the symptoms) and support you through the step by step process to rehabilitation.

If you are dealing with stiffness, aches, pains or injury, whether it be a recent development or something you have been dealing with for years, please give me a call and book an appointment on 021 104 4892, or reach me at turnoquil@protonmail.com.

I live in Rangiora and operate out of my home clinic, however I can come to you for an additional fee if required.

I want my service to be affordable for as many people as possible: My hourly rate is $80 per hour with a complimentary 30 minutes extra on our first session to cover a thorough medical history and conversation to get to know each other!

Thanks everybody and have a great Christmas season.

A local landlord in Riccarton booked what was meant to be a simple, routine CCTV drain check, just for a bit of peace of mind for a tidy, well-kept rental. But under that neat garden and solid paths, our camera told a different story…

We found several cracks and offsets in the old ceramic drain lines, likely hidden damage from the 2010–2011 quakes. Nothing too dramatic yet, but it was only a matter of time before things got messy.

Luckily, the property still had an EQC (now Natural Hazards Commission) claim on record. Our team stepped in to help the owner with the process, and before long, the repairs were fully approved and sorted at no extra cost to them.

We replaced the damaged sections, tidied everything up, and left both the tenant and landlord relieved they’d caught the problem early.

Moral of the story: sometimes a “routine check” can save you a lot of stress (and cash) down the line!

“I’m originally from Egypt. My wife is Filipino, she got a job offer as a nurse. Then I decided to come to visit. So I visited, but I never went back.

I just like the environment, like the people. We came here, maybe, in 2005. I come from an Arabic background, so of course, the language was my first problem here. Even if I tried to understand, I can't catch one word. I had to study, and listen to news, music, whatever. I can talk to people, I don't feel shy.

In the beginning, I didn't have a business. I used to work for another shop. I used to study English because my English wasn't good enough. I used to work at night, study full time in the morning. Then after three years, I was able to speak and understand English, so I started my business in Ferry Road. My first shop opened in 2012 at Ferry Road under Sabry’s Souvlaki. Then my second shop was, I think, Redwood, then Wairakei Road, Hornby, Papanui then the city centre.

Around 2019, the first one was in Hereford Street. I love the city. I did get the chance to open in different areas, but no, I don't know. I just like the city. This location, High Street, it's very nice. I like the people. We got support from the office workers. I like my neighbours. I like the city too much!

Even the homeless are friendly to me. I know most of them, I support them with whatever they need. I just help them. You can't just fight or ignore them, you have to be part of that community as well.
We also have a bubble tea shop, Boba Time. But my wife, she handles it. I don't know what I think about bubble tea, because it's a different culture, but I know about kebab and souvlaki!

I have four boys, three born here. One of them is studying as a doctor. You have to spend time with family as well. My oldest kids live outside the city, so as soon as they come home, we make dinner, talk about family, you know, to be connected, we're close family, and we keep our culture as well.

What we miss, unfortunately, is the cathedral. This is the first thing I saw when I arrived. I went inside many times. It was amazing. Hopefully it will come back one day.”
