The Fire Service has recently undergone new legistrative changes as well as a name change, our organisation is now known as Fire and Emergency New Zealand.
One thing that hasn’t changed however are our principles. Our organisation is immensely proud that we are consistently represented near the top of the most trusted professions and appreciate the tremendous goodwill shown to us by the public.
We have recently been troubled however hearing from the police and in the media that there has been a spate of incidents where a man dressed in a Fire Service t–shirt has been going door-to-door offering to service smoke alarms and has been stealing handbags, wallets and other valuables from elderly people.
Whereas our organisation certainly offer the installation of smoke alarms as well as the changing of batteries as part of our Home Fire Safety Checks, this is simply not how we operate.
Onehunga station always has four firefighters on duty at all times and we stay together to ensure our operational readiness to respond to emergencies. We are also required to wear our full uniforms complete with dress shirt, name badge and epaulettes when addressing members of the public in non-emergency situations. Personnel are also issued with photo identification.
If you are in any doubt as to the authenticity of any person representing the Fire Service in our area we advise you ask to see their photo identification, if this is not provided and you still have suspicions you should deny them entry and contact the local police.
Onehunga station is actively seeking to significantly increase the number of Home Fire Safety checks we carry out. These checks are a very important part of our fire safety initiatives and provide advice for keeping you, your families and the community safe. The checks are a comprehensive room by room assessment and cover such things as carrying out a night time safety checks, regularly testing smoke alarms to ensure they work, safety around cooking and practicing escape plans.
At this stage Onehunga station does not conduct cold calling as this imposter has, we operate on an invitation only basis, so if you or someone you know, would like us to carry out these checks please contact the station on

Stay safe and look after each other.
