We were presented a report a couple days ago regarding the Kennedy Park stairs in Castor Bay and thought it would be a good point to update people on where things are at.

As local residents will know, the timber stairway leads down to the beach were severely damaged during cyclone Debbie in April this year.

A report provided to us has estimated the cost to repair the stairs is around $471,000, however we are still waiting on advice from a geotechnical engineer's report.

The geotechnical report will identify future slip risks and specify slope stabilisation requirements before any repair or reinstatement works are approved and commence.

This report will better inform us of the real cost of reinstatement, as well as how safe it will be and how resistant the works will be to future storm events.

We expect that report to be back with officers in the first few months of next year and to see final costings and recommendations from officers for us to consider and hopefully approve in autumn 2018.

All things going well, costs and risks will not escalate drastically and we will be able to approve and move the repair project into our 2018/19 renewals programme/schedule.

From there, the job could be potentially tendered and approved by the end of spring 2018, and work start and conclude during the 2018/19 summer season.

We will update you again when we know more.
