Terrible algae sludge in Onepoto Domain Lake.

Lorna from Glenfield

I went to Onepoto Domain to walk my dog on this beautiful Sunday afternoon. I was horrified to see a thick layer of algae sludge completely covering the lake on one side of the little bridge. All the ducks had disappeared. I observed that the sludge was increasing to the other side of the bridge too. However a team of volunteers were busy trying to scoop up the sludge at the far end. Well done! Not an easy nor a thankful task. They all deserve a medal. However, the Council should promptly get onto this problem before the algae completely blocks off the outlet to the sea, and completely smothers the whole lake.

Some Choice News!

Kia pai from Sharing the Good Stuff

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.

Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?

Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
