Proposal to extend West Coast Wilderness Trail
From local democracy reporter Lois Williams:
A wilderness trail going all the way from Ross to Fox Glacier would boost conservation education and regenerative tourism, the West Coast Conservation Board has heard.
In a report to the board's September meeting, one of its newest members, Hadley Mills, urged the Department of Conservation (DOC) to look at extending a proposed tourism trail between Ōkārito and Fox Glacier. He wanted the trail to be extended to Ross to link up with the existing 139-kilometre West Coast Wilderness Trail between Greymouth and Ross.
Board member Mark Mellsop said rivers and road bridges between Ross and Fox Glacier would pose problems for cyclists. He suggested a new coastal trail would be a better option.
The board agreed to take the proposal up at its next planning day.
