Strong winds delay repairs to damaged North Canterbury power pylons
Work to fix several damaged power pylons, which closed a South Island highway and caused widespread power outages, has been delayed because of strong winds.
Inspections found six power pylons that normally held conducting wire had been damaged during the failure, which happened when a high voltage conducting wire fell across State Highway 7 in the Weka Pass area of Waikari in North Canterbury on August 17.
Transpower general manager of grid delivery Mark Ryall earlier said no-one was hurt in the incident, which appeared to have been a “one-off fault and not a systemic issue”.
The new circuit was initially expected to be operational about 4pm on Tuesday, but had been delayed until 4pm Thursday because of strong winds in the area.
