Perspective during Lockdown

Ingram from Nawton

Using a CDC graph depicting deaths per capita per year from infectious diseases in the USA, I have calculated that the US in 2020 went backwards to between 1945-1948.
When my Grandad (who died recently) was born the deaths from infectious disease would have been twice what they were in 2020 in the US.
A modern day 100 year pandemic isn't half as bad as normal conditions when my Grandad was born!
And that's not taking into account polio which was more likely to paralyze or cripple than be deadly.
The 2020 conditions in the US brought infectious disease deaths inline with normal conditions about ten years before my Dad was born.
This is only of course if you were lucky enough to be born in a country where infectious disease was being managed effectively.
The new normal is not Lockdowns. The new normal is comparing statistics to the recent historical lows.
I hope this graph provides some perspective.

Some Choice News!

Kia pai from Sharing the Good Stuff

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.

Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?

Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
