Young West Coaster Griffin Neame hailed after try assist on Cowboys debut

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

West Coasters are celebrating the debut of the rugby league region's first NRL player in three years after Griffin Neame's try-assist start for the Cowboys.

Neame, 20, won plaudits from North Queensland coach Todd Payten despite being on the losing side against the Wests Tigers on Saturday night.

The middle forward played 36 minutes off the interchange bench, reeling off 110m with the ball in hand and making 20 tackles.

He made two tackle breaks and collected his first try assist, delivering the final pass for 18-year-old fellow debutant Jeremiah Nanai to score in the 35th minute of a 24-16 defeat to the Tigers in Townsville.

Payten delivered some plaudits to Neame - the first West Coaster to play in the NRL since Slade Griffin's final game for the Newcastle Knights in 2018. Read more here.
