Potentially Toxic algae found in Tomahawk Lagoon

Neighbourly.co.nz

Algae that can potentially cause serious illness in people and animals has been detected in routine testing in Tomahawk Lagoon.

The lagoon, which is situated outside of the Dunedin city limits, has tested positive for cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) which commonly thrives during periods of low rainfall during summer months.

Land, Air, Water Aotearoa (LAWA) says that cyanotoxins effects can vary from nausea to more serious symptoms such as liver damage.

The Otago Regional Council has erected warning signs at the entrance of the lagoon and at the creek that feeds into Tomahawk Beach and these will remain in place until the weekly samples return results below any threat to health.

Both animals and people are advised to stay out of the lagoon.

For more information please head to the Otago Regional Council's website.
