Queenstown's backdrop may become new national park as DOC reviews Remarkables land
The Department of Conservation (DOC) has opened a review process into the Remarkables Conservation Area, which forms the backdrop to Queenstown, on Wednesday morning.
The 33,000-hectare area is currently classified as stewardship land, the lowest classification on DOC’s scale. It could be reclassified under one of four different categories. National park status offers the highest level of protection.
DOC is seeking submissions on the values of the area until February 26.A second round of consultation would be carried in 2021 once there was a proposal for a new classification (or classifications), which would likely include public hearings. Read more here.
