Warning issued after potentially toxic algae discovered in Canterbury river
A health warning for the Selwyn River (Waikirikiri) has been issued following the discovery of potentially toxic algae.
The warning, issued by the Canterbury District Health Board, is in place at Whitecliffs Domain (camping area) and upstream of Whitecliffs Rd (picnic area). People should avoid the area and keep animals, particularly dogs, away from the water until the health warning is lifted. People should also stay out of the water.
It can produce toxins harmful to animals and people. Human symptoms include skin rashes, nausea, stomach cramps, tingling and numbness around the mouth and fingertips. If pets show signs of illness, they should be taken to the vet.
Every low-flowing river should be treated cautiously and the presence of toxic algae should be checked, a CDHB media statement said.
Environment Canterbury will continue monitoring and the public will be notified of changes in water quality.
