Raise a glass to North Canterbury's wine region
North Canterbury vineyards The Crater Rim, Mount Brown Estates and Waiata have won five gold medals between them at this year’s New World Wine Awards, including two for 2019 pinot noir.
Normally considered the domain of Central Otago, this year there were no Central Otago pinot noir in the Top 50, but two from North Canterbury.
North Canterbury Wine Region chair Catherine Keith, also director of Mount Brown Estates, said this was a particularly great result for the area.
“This isn’t new to North Canterbury, we’ve actually been doing it for a really long time,’’ Keith said.
“Central Otago has a massive marketing budget, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only region making good pinot noir.’’

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?
Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
