Bruce Smith likely returning to Westland mayoralty

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

Controversial Westland District mayor Bruce Smith has squeaked back in, according to progress results based on 95 per cent of the vote.

He received 1009 votes, not far ahead of current deputy mayor Latham Martin's 924 (a difference of 85 votes).

With 200-odd votes yet to be counted, plus any special votes, Smith, who is "in his 68th year" was on Saturday cautiously optimistic he'd retain the mayoralty, but said he had a plan B if he was ousted: whatever retirement activities took his fancy.

"With elections, nothing is ever certain."
