Climate Change, Protest and the meaning of life
The student protest on Friday has got me thinking. There is a lot of talk about donut economics at the moment, focused in environmental fundamentals, which is interesting, but it is not a new concept. Tim Jackson wrote "Prosperity without growth" in 2009, with a subtitle of "economics for a finite planet". Regrettably, a decade on, its the subject of much talkfest but nothing gets done while we inch ever closer to oblivion. Why is this? In my view there are vested interests in maintaining a degradation system. Obesity and environmental damage are inextricably linked and one need look no further than the four horsemen of our upcoming apocalypse for the cause. Big Farmer, Big Pharma, Alcohol and Tobacco industries are the behemoths that are riding this planet into the ground. There is too much money in it for them to change and there is no incentive for them to stop. The waste and pollution produced by these galloping ghouls is enormous and only surmounted by their greed. Our individual efforts are insignificant by comparison. How are we to rein them in? When are we going to start holding these faceless institutions to account?

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
