Wildflowers in Kaikoura

Mei Leng Wong Reporter from NZ Gardener & Get Growing

Have you seen the wildflowers on your doorstep? In our June issue, we had asked plantsman Gordon Collier to name the best place in NZ to see wildflowers, and he chose Kaikoura, arguably better known for its marine life. "The attractions of this seaside town are well known. Yet, a few springs ago, I found here an unheralded but spectacular display
of antirrhinums stretching away on rocky banks. I had to stop and clamber over the rubble ground to stand among the tall spikes of multicoloured snapdragons, mainly flowering in cerise to pinks and purple flowers.... The wild antirrhinums at Kaikoura were something I won’t easily forget."

Now that we're on the other side of winter, we certainly hope to do some wildflower spotting soon! Read the full story below.

Some Choice News!

Kia pai from Sharing the Good Stuff

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.

Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?

Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
