Championing our amazing volunteers - Adrienne

Hilary MorrishAllen from Lake Taupo Hospice

As part of National Volunteer Week #NVW2017 we are profiling some of our wonderful volunteers and the work that they do.

Today – meet Adrienne (Volunteering 10 years)

Adrienne coordinates a group of unusual volunteers for Lake Taupo Hospice – a creative bunch who make handmade cards for bereaved families. This group reflects the wrap around support that Lake Taupo Hospice provides – which is centred not just on the patient and their immediate needs, but also on the care and support of their families throughout and after the patients death. As Adrienne says “I wish other people knew more about Hospice than it just looks after dying people. They are there for families too. It is not just cancer sufferers but anyone who has a terminal illness”. The group make nearly 100 beautifully hand crafted cards a year and it is a wonderful way for this group to put their passion and artistic skills to great use. The cards are a really personal touch for families at a difficult time. A lover of croquet and petanque, Adrienne got involved with Hospice through illness in her family and seeing what Hospice did first had, says that the most rewarding part of volunteering for Lake Taupo Hospice is the “opportunity to learn something new and to meet people from all aspects of life and all age groups. I’m amazed at the number of people involved and the variety of aspects involved”.

In addition to her card making, Adrienne is a transcriber for our volunteer biographers team and often helps out doing a variety of tasks during fundraising and promotional events.

Some Choice News!

Kia pai from Sharing the Good Stuff

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.

Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.

Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?

Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
