The latest from TCDC
Here is the situation at 4pm:
State Highway 25, Thames Coast Road, remains closed.
Our contractors are currently working to clear the 100-plus slips on State Highway 25, Thames Coast Road.
We encourage you to avoid this area unless you are a resident.
Residents are slowly being escorted through sections of the road by the contractor's pilot vehicle with caution. This is only possible in intervals approximately every hour, so expect delays if you are returning to your property in this area.
It is advised if you live on, or need to use the Thames Coast Road, that you only do so for emergencies until the closure has been lifted.
Local road closures:
Tapu-Coroglen - unfortunately the work to remove the material at the top of the slip was unsuccessful, therefore work will continue tomorrow and the road will remain closed until the work can be completed (contractors are expecting this to be tomorrow afternoon). The road is closed approximately three kms in from the Tapu side and 200 meters in from the Coroglen side.
Black Jack Road is open to one lane at approx 1km from SH25 (Kuaotunu side of Blackjack Road Hill).
Sailors Grave Road - open to one lane 100m south of turnoff on ocean side where a slip has undermined the road - caution is required.
Colville Road open to one lane 1.5km after Papa Aroha motor camp.
Port Charles Road - open to one lane.
Waiomu Valley Rd Ford - open to 4 x 4 vehicles only.
Te Kouma Rd - open to one lane.
Wentworth Valley Rd, Whangamata - is now open.
There is a slip on Purangi Rd that is blocking one lane before the vineyard going into Cooks Beach. Please drive with caution.
No other District roads are reported closed.
State Highway network:
SH25 between Thames and Coromandel ('Thames Coast Road') - due to multiple slips in this area, the road is closed.
SH25 near to Sailors Grave Road, Pumpkin Hill - due to a washout on this section of the State Highway, stop/go traffic management is now in place. Expect delays or avoid the area if possible.
SH25 2km South Of Blackjack Rd, Kuaotunu - due to a large slip on this section of State Highway the road is reduced to one lane under stop/go control.
The slip at Kuaotunu Hill (SH25) is being cleared so the road is now open to one lane with stop/go traffic management in place. Expected resolution - 6pm tonight.
SH25A Kopu to Hikuai road - due to slips in the area, and road works stop/go traffic managment is in place. Please drive with caution and expect delays.
SH25 Whitianga to Tairua - due to slips in the area, stop/go traffic managment is in place. Please drive with caution.

Many New Zealand gardens aren’t seeing as many monarch butterflies fluttering around their swan plants and flower beds these days — the hungry Asian paper wasp has been taking its toll.
Thanks to people like Alan Baldick, who’s made it his mission to protect the monarch, his neighbours still get to enjoy these beautiful butterflies in their own backyards.
Thinking about planting something to invite more butterflies, bees, and birds into your garden?
Thanks for your mahi, Alan! We hope this brings a smile!
