FREEDOM FROM DIETS. Raglan. A healthy weight can be achieved & maintained without dieting, calorie counting or weighing & measuring food. In this workshop, we will discuss why diets don't work for most people and what Science says is the healthiest food plan for most humans. We will tease apart the diet related facts from the diet related myths & propaganda.

Come along and learn the classic reasons why people become over weight and specific skills and strategies that can help bring weight back under control. We will also look at exercise; why it is important for good health, but why it is not very helpful for weight loss.

Dr. Heidi Douglass is a registered Clinical Psychologist with 35 years of experience in the field of Psychology. She is also certified in Plant Based Nutrition by the T. Colin Campbell Institute of Cornell University. Dr. Heidi established, and is the lead trainer of, the Mindful Eating Program for "Mindfulness Works"; the largest provider of mindfulness training courses in Australasia. The treatment of over eating & obesity is one of her primary specialties.

It's common to have sadness visit sometimes. However, if you are bothered by sadness, low mood, feeling blue or irritable, more days than not, it might be clinical depression. Depression is so common that the World Health Organization (WHO) says that it will be one of the world's greatest problems by 2020.

Our habits of thinking, and how we label things, has a huge impact on our mood. Our style of thinking can be a fuel for our Depression. So can our lifestyle choices.

SELF-SABOTAGE or RELAPSE?
It has become clear to me, after many years of treating addiction & over eating issues that some people are clearly addicted to food items like: sugar, refined white flour, cheese/ dairy, chocolate, fast food & processed food.
Just like some people can not consume alcohol in moderation so they need to avoid it, the same can apply to some people with these kinds of food items that Nature did not design humans to eat.
We don’t need alcohol in our lives to survive, but we do need food. So, without in any way down playing the difficulty of alcohol addiction, I think food addiction can in some ways be even harder to manage.
When I hear someone discuss how distressed they feel about how they “did it again”, over ate again, binged again, it sounds so similar to the stories told by alcoholic clients or clients addicted to other drugs like cocaine. Their symptom pictures match up.
Often clients will be upset about the fact that they “know better”, but don’t “do better”. I think that calling these episodes a “relapse” is far more accurate than what I usually hear “self-sabotage”. Self-sabotage seems to include a generous amount of blame & guilt that helps no one.
If we call the over eating episode a “relapse” & look instead for the trigger, we can learn how to prevent this relapse in future.
If you routinely find yourself consuming far more food than you had planned, way more often than you feel is healthy for you, you may want to experiment with stepping away from some of these foods for a few weeks & see how you feel. Do it as an experiment with kindness & curiosity.
