There are 8 species of Kowhai and depending on your variety, your tree could be without leaves before, during, or after flowering.
Tui and Kereru love the Kowhai nectar, making this tree an enormous asset to any garden and providing you with your very own “goldmine”.

The Borer Moth doesn’t fly till about October, so the risk of your tree being infected by the pest is greatly reduced if you get it done soon.

It is created by a natural process of deliberate branch shedding called abscission which can be due to a weak point or lack of vigor.
The deadwood is very brittle and can easily snap when limbs move in the wind.

Most of the debris on the road and driveways after a storm will be deadwood. Be proactive and go through your trees to remove deadwood before it's torn off and hits your car or house.

If you need help, as always, we are here for you.

🌲⛈Split limbs and torn branches from our recent storms can have a massive impact on the future health of your tree.
Active “first aid” measures such as making a remedial clean cut to allow the tree to heal quickly from beaks and tears, could make all the difference to your tree’s recovery. Tree decline and poor health from damage may not happen overnight, it could take 18 months, but by this time it could be too late.
Check your trees for damage and where warranted, some tree surgery may save your trees life!

You can, you just need to trim the tree annually to keep the tree to the size you want.
Remember that issues with large roots uplifting the footpath and driveways etc will be greatly reduced if the tree is kept smaller from the beginning. The roots grow to support the water and nutrient requirements for the canopy as well as stabilize the tree. If you keep the canopy smaller the roots don't need to be too big.

If you're not sure how to trim your trees, we can help you with that.😀

At this time of the year, you might notice alien-type formations on the Arborist mulch you have around your garden.
The stinkhorn is a common fungus on mulch in Auckland and first appears as a horn-like growth that can develop arms like an octopus. When mature the stinkhorn produces a foul rotting flesh type odor that attracts insects to eat the slimy tips and then distribute the spores elsewhere. 🤢
Don’t worry, they do not cause plant disease as they grow on dead organic material.
So no need to stress about the fungi… admire them, they are doing a hugely important job of breaking down the organic material and recycling the nutrients back into the soil for your plants to use again....even if they do stink!

This is heartbreaking if it appears on a specimen tree or even on a newly planted treasure. As with humans, there is no cure or treatment for a virus, so a healthy strong tree is vital to resist infections.
I saw this recently in a client's newly planted grove of magnolias. They were reluctant to remove an infected tree, however, the other specimens were at risk as a virus can be transmitted by vectors such as chewing and biting insects. Learn more here www.thetreeman.co.nz...
