One of the great things we love about the beautiful city of Wellington is the melting pot of cultures in our community.

We are so lucky to be able to learn and experience different languages, foods, ideas, dances, and music. We are fortunate that our Greta Point families are happy to share these experiences with us too!

Over the coming weeks we are celebrating our Samoan Aīga (family) and Tamaiti (children) in the center. Nardia has been singing Samoan’s songs to the tamaiti and Jo has been creating magic in the kitchen with Samoan Masi (biscuits).

The mix is quite wet, and we reduced the sugar and increased the cooking time – they have a texture similar to shortbread but a taste similar to Krispy biscuits – and were a BIG hit with the tamaiti and faiaoga (teachers). (I might have sampled a few just to make sure they were up to scratch!). Attached is the recipe for you to try at home.

Happy Cooking!

So Tomorrow is the day!

The tamariki have been making art, learning about colors and changing colors and on Monday some of us wore funny glasses.

We today have started decorating the foyer in anticipation for tomorrow.

If tamariki can please dress in YELLOW, ORANGE OR RED (or dress up) that will add to the fun.

If whanau are in a position to donate to the collection box in the foyer (in the bookshelf, grab a daffodil as well).

BALLOONS, STICKERS and TATTOOS will be available for the tamariki tomorrow in their classrooms

We are grateful for your support with this fundraiser.

Earlier this week, we made up another care package for them and our wonderful staff member JO delivered it.
What an amazing whanau environment we have at our center - supporting other whanau in our community.

On Tuesday our Kea Tamariki had an excursion to the Community Gardens located in Evans Bay Parade.

At the gardens - we stop at each raised garden and Jo talked about what we can see and the tamariki have LOTS to say as well about what they see, smell.

We spend some time at the Strawberry garden - looking for the flowers and talking about bees, pollination) and how the flowers turn into the fruit.

This created much excitement and it was decided we NEED to have strawberries in our garden too.

Below is a quote from one of our tamariki about our trip to the community garden!

Have a happy and safe weekend Whanau!

It is with much excitement we can introduce our new Center Manager Nardia Whiteman. She joined our center last week and has been focusing on spending time with our beautiful tamariki, our Kaiako and meeting our Whanau – she is also managing to spend some time in the office while getting to know the center!

Nardia was fortunate enough to have a handover with Leslyn – which means the transition has been smooth and already the tamariki are excited to see and chat to Nardia about their day!

Here is an introduction from Nardia:

I have been part of early childhood education over fifteen years and am passionate about providing quality education and believe that it essential that all children have an opportunity to play and learn in a supportive and caring environment.

My personal teaching philosophy includes:

• Collaboration with parents / caregivers to form a strong partnership in the children’s learning

• Create a positive environment that encourages children to take risks and know that their culture, values, and ideas are respected and celebrated by their peers and the teacher.

• Create planning that is fun and is authentic and based on children’s emerging interests so that it is meaningful and relevant.

• Give all children the opportunity to experience success by using a wide variety of teaching approaches, as I am aware all children learn in different ways.

• Allow children’s natural curiosity to guide and direct their learning.

You will see me either in the office or out in the rooms spending time alongside the kaiako and tamariki. I look forward to getting to know you all.

Arohanui

Nardia Whiteman

Nardias personal teaching philosophy sits perfectly with our center philosophy and we are very excited to have her working with us at the center.

Take care Whanau

Over past few months with support and help from the wider community we have been creating a display in our center about Ngake and Whātaitai.

Nga mihi ki a whanau Ditchburn! Trent Ditchburn created the taniwha; Ngake and Whātaitai. Trent’s younger brothers Raiden and Nova also did some amazing mahi. Their parents Phil and Ahlun helped to assemble the display on the foyer wall. The Greta Point tamariki have painted backgrounds and shells and birds!
This has all been coordinated and pulled together by our wonderful kaiako Dana! and is on display in our foyer (come in and check it out!).

What a great way to finish the week. Have a safe and happy weekend Whànau.

Yesterday, our tamariki had homemade wholemeal matariki bread with cheesy homemade baked beans.

It smelt and tasted good!

All Jo's cooking meets the guidelines for GOLD healthy heart and her food is a big hit with our whànau, tamariki and staff.

Having a center that provides a full menu service, means less stress for whànau in the mornings (no lunch boxes!) it also means they are confident their tamariki are eating a diet that meets healthy heart guidelines.

It's is something we are very proud of here at Greta point.

Have we all enjoyed this short week??
