FISCHER, Alfred (Fred)

On December 10, 2021 in Victoria, BC, Canada, aged 89 years. Treasured husband of the late Cathreen, dear father of the late Martin and father-in-law of Linnea. Beloved father and father-in-law of Ann and Hugo, Wendy and Chris. Adored grandfather of Raphaella, James and Alexander. Beloved brother of John (Johnny), and uncle of Mark and Brent. Fred was born on April 28, 1932 in Christchurch and grew up on the West Coast, although he was educated in Christchurch at Loreto and St Bede’s College. He was Dux of St. Bede’s in 1949 and Senior Scholar in chemistry at Canterbury in 1953. He earned a Ph.D. in organic chemistry at the University of Canterbury and subsequently did research and teaching at Canterbury and in the US and UK before emigrating to Canada in 1969. Fred had a distinguished academic and administrative career at the University of Victoria, where he maintained a research lab while serving in administrative roles including Head of Department, Dean and Vice President. After retirement, he and Cathreen maintained their New Zealand connections with regular trips to visit family and friends. Due to the pandemic, no memorial gathering is planned at the present time.
