What is Chiropractic?

Our whole body, especially our spine, needs to move and be physically challenged in order to stay healthy, but for a lot of people this is not happening. Today, more than ever before, people are doing things that ruin their spinal health. We work long hours at sedentary jobs, we binge watch TV and we stare down at our smartphone for hours.

The activities of daily living that took a lot of physical effort in past generations are so much easier with washing machines, dryers, vacuums and dishwashers. We buy all our groceries from supermarkets, in fact we can now place our orders online. We use cars and elevators to avoid walking.

The automation of everything has evolved to ease our workload, in our jobs and in our homes. This has led to a widening gap between the well and the unwell, as some choose to keep active and some don’t.

The lack of movement in our lives leads to increasing stiffness, joint dysfunction and an increased chance of injury when we do exert ourselves. Chiropractors see these effects in the spine on a daily basis.

Most of our patients present with back pain, neck pain and headaches and chiropractic has a great track record with these conditions. However, chiropractic is more than just a treatment for stiffness and pain of the spine… it’s a way of improving your overall health.

The spinal column is made up of 24 moveable bones, called vertebrae, that sit on top of the sacrum and pelvis. The spinal cord lives inside the spine and sends out nerves between the vertebrae to every part of the body. When a facet joint (between two vertebrae) becomes dysfunctional (from accidents, overloading and prolonged poor posture) it can create inflammation and irritation to the spinal nerve. This can lead to pain, numbness and tingling in the neck or back, as well as along the nerve. Additionally, the spine and nerves need to be fully functional and working in harmony so that the messages that go along those nerves can get the right information from the brain to the body and from the body to the brain.

Increasingly, people are using chiropractic as a way of getting and staying healthy, regardless of their symptoms. By keeping the spine and nerve system performing at their best, our patients are able to maintain mobility, prevent injury and live an active lifestyle.

So, although people see chiropractors as a treatment option for back pain, neck pain and headaches, it’s probably more accurate to think of us as legal performance enhancers.

Now you understand why our Chiropractors at The Chiro are so passionate about doing what we do, because we know that our adjustments can have such a huge impact on your overall health.
