The Draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP) 2024 sets our direction and work to manage and reduce waste.

It is a long document, so we have created this snapshot version (summary)

The draft plan is shaped by findings from our Waste Assessment 2023, and suggestions gathered in 2023 through engagement with iwi/Māori and key stakeholders.

It is guided by the same Zero Waste by 2040 vision for Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland as previous plans.

The revised version contains updated principles and objectives to guide decision-making and sets actions and targets for the next six years.

What is being proposed

The draft plan includes proposals to:

  • focus on rethinking how products are designed and extending their life span, and options to re-use, repair or repurpose items
  • target construction and demolition waste and focus on organic, plastics, packaging and textile waste, and biosolids (organic materials resulting from the treatment of wastewater)
  • move from weekly to fortnightly kerbside rubbish collections. You can view frequently asked questions on this proposal.
  • speed up efforts to minimise operational waste from the Auckland Council Group (Auckland Council and its council-controlled organisations)
  • address litter and illegal dumping to protect public health and the environment.

What we want your feedback on

We want your feedback on this draft plan to help us protect Auckland’s environment, people and resources by changing the way we manage and minimise waste.

Draft Hauraki Gulf Islands Waste Plan 2024
