Two outstanding scholarships reward great work ethic at Kuranui

Caelum Greaves accepts his certificates at last years Prizegiving.

At a recent Kuranui College assembly celebrating student NCEA endorsements, former Year 13 students Caelum Greaves and Jessie Davidson were acknowledged for their outstanding scholarship achievements.

“Achieving Outstanding Scholarship in English was a defining point in my life, as it showed me that I can do whatever I put enough effort towards,” explained Greaves.

Greaves who was DUX for 2019 and also gained scholarship in Biology, is studying a Bachelor of Arts and Science at Otago University. He is aiming for an honours degree in Science Communication, whilst majoring in Ecology, and English and Linguistics. Jessie has gone on to study Resource and Environmental Planning at Massey University.

Alongside respect, empathy, integrity and creativity, determination has always been one of the values that Kuranui’s students live by, and it is consistently demonstrated by the drive and perseverance that the college’s students have to succeed at such a high level.

“Success is measured in so many ways, and at our school our success is not only measured by our NCEA results, but also the many other things we excel at,” said Kuranui College Head Boy, Henry Issacs.

“Our teachers always give us the opportunity to excel in all aspects of school,” added Issacs

Greaves is a good example of a great work ethic, following a previous opportunity with support from college staff, to gain Level 3 whilst he was still in Year 12.

Kuranui recognises that students learn at different paces and the college’s smaller size and supportive environment allows it to be much more flexible when it comes to encouraging students to study different NCEA levels whilst attending school in a different year group.
