Top 5 Gifts the kids can make at home with NZ Compare
Dec 15, 2023

The kids will love crafting these fun and simple gifts for family and friends this Christmas.

While it can be fun to hit the mall for gift-searching, there is truly nothing like gifting something that was crafted by hand, and with love. It shows the time and thought that went into the gift for that special someone. DIY gifts that the kids can make at home are a great way to encourage the festive spirit and their creativity.

We have put together a list of the top 5 gifts the kids can make at home.

Reindeer Chow Goodie Bags

This is a sweet trail mix-like treat that is simple and moreish! For this you will only need:

  • Coco Pops Chex cereal

  • M&Ms

  • Pretzels

  • Mini Reese's peanut butter cups

  • Peanut butter

  • Chocolate chips

  • Sugar

  • Cocoa powder

Simply coat the chex cereal in melted peanut butter and melted chocolate chips, and dust them with a mix of sugar, and a little cocoa powder. Once dry and set, pour into a bowl and add in the m&ms, the Reeses, and pretzels. Mix together with tongs. This will make a large batch that you can divide into little paper bags and tie off with a cute ribbon bow. Add on a gift sticker, and voila! An adorable DIY kid, great for teachers, family, and friends alike. You make this recipe nut-free by simply swapping out the peanut butter and Reeses for white chocolate, and marshmallows!

Painted Terracotta Pots

Grab your terracotta pots, paints, and brushes, pop on an apron, and unleash your creativity! This is a lovely quiet time activity too, and will keep busy minds occupied. After the works of art have dried, you could even plant herbs or other greenery to create a personal and wholesome gift. Terracotta pots can be found at the Warehouse, Kmart and you can find paints and brushes at these stores too. There are mini terracotta pots at Kmart priced at $4 for 3 pots.

Body Scrub

Whip up a gift perfect for those who love self-pampering. For a coffee scrub, mix a half cup of coffee grounds, with a tablespoon of warm water, and two tablespoons of coconut oil. Use the same method, and swap for the coffee for a half cup of brown sugar for an alternative. Scoop into mason jars and add a ribbon or bow to the lid. You could even write your own label on a gift sticker. You can easily find coconut oil in the supermarket on the shelf with other oils!

Homemade Spice Mix

Lemon rosemary garlic? BBQ rub? Italian blend? Whatever your heart desires, combine your favourite dried herbs, spices and salt together in a bowl. Use a funnel to pour them into spice jars. Add a gift tag with your child’s handwriting, “Seasons Greetings!” for a cute, Christmas pun.

DIY Clay Bowls

Grab some clay, and a rolling pin. Use the rolling pin to create an even, flat piece of clay, and use a butter knife to cut the clay into a circle. Turn a bowl upside down, and gently press the clay around it. Once the bowl is formed, you can use stencils or cookie cutters to make patterns in the clay. Then allow it to dry and harden. Next, get to work with some paint to bring the bowl to life. This is a wonderful gift for someone to store jewellery and other knick-knacks, or simply put on display.
