Exhibition to showcase artwork from Tongariro Prison
A new exhibition at Taupō Museum showcases the artwork created by prisoners of Tongariro Prison.
The “From the Inside – Mai i Roto” exhibition runs from Saturday, September 28 to Monday, November 4 and came about after an artwork from the prison was entered in last year’s Dog Show exhibition. Museum Exhibition officer Kerence Stephen said the museum had worked with Arts Access New Zealand to invite entries from Prison’s across New Zealand and the Dog Show entry started a relationship with the Department of Corrections.
“I thought it would be a great idea to hold an exhibition of art produced in the Prison and after visiting was really impressed with the quality of work there. Painting, drawing, carving, murals, even a boat created from 2,500 matchsticks – the diversity is amazing, and we’ve been working with volunteer coordinator Karin Deed to put the show together. The artists will not be identifiable, but we will have a feedback box so that visitors can share messages of support and encouragement. I’m a huge believer in arts and creativity for wellbeing and this exhibition will give the public the opportunity to view these artists in a different light,” she said.
Tongariro Prison Director Lyn O’Connor said art plays a contributing role in the rehabilitation of prisoners and enables them to express themselves creatively.
“Studies show that the use of art in therapy can improve communication, increase insight, and teach skills that can help reduce the likelihood of re-offending. It gives the men in our care an opportunity to express themselves in a way words can’t.”
“I’m incredibly proud of the men who are contributing to the exhibition and our staff who have supported them to realise their artistic talents. The men see it as an opportunity to give something positive back to the community and feel privileged to have their art on display,” she said.
Arts Access executive director Richard Benge will be discussing the importance of accessibility and visibility in the arts, with a key focus on what Arts Access Aotearoa does nationally at 11am on Saturday, September 28.
