About Sarah

Bio

Sarah van Zyl is a singer-songwriter and guitarist and was born in Durban, South Africa. She is currently based in Auckland, New Zealand. She completed her Bachelor of Music in Composition at the University of Auckland and now works as a songwriter and performer.

Original Music

Sarah has released two EPs of original songs, ‘Ripples’ (2019) and ‘Vacant Stations’ (in collaboration with guitarist, James Howe – 2021). Her latest solo single from 2023 is ‘Penguins Crossing (Oamaru).’ Sarah’s music is available to purchase/stream on online music stores, including Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, and YouTube.

Performing Artist

Sarah performs all over Auckland, specialising in retro covers from the 1920s-70s, including songbook classics, rock ‘n roll, doo-wop, pop, folk, and Motown.

Sarah has extensive experience performing music for the elderly, and performs regularly at over 20 retirement villages around Auckland, for their Happy Hours and Dine & Dance functions. For the past two years, she has facilitated a weekly singing group in collaboration with Dementia NZ for people with dementia to come together in the joy of music and singing.

She has many other passions: travel, hiking, cooking, baking, gardening, dancing, psychology, philosophy. Sarah writes regular articles/blogs, which are also available on her Substack, called ‘Small Wonders’.
