Why this petition matters

Started by Marika Harvey

We, the undersigned, urge Pharmac to reconsider its recent decision to reverse funding for the Medtronic insulin pump Guardian 4 hybrid closed-loop system for those living with Type 1 diabetes. Furthermore, include the G4 CGM in the proposed funding plan.  This decision has left many users shocked and concerned about their ability to effectively manage their health.

The Medtronic system boasts the most advanced algorithms used in 150 countries, crucial for managing blood glucose levels and ensuring the well-being and peace of mind of countless individuals. For many of us, access to this technology is not just a convenience but a lifeline, enabling us to live fulfilling lives and stay as healthy as possible for as long as possible.

If this funding decision is not reversed, users of this world-class  Medtronic technology system will be left with no choice but to opt for inferior pumps with substandard technology or bear the financial burden themselves. For numerous families, this is simply not feasible, forcing them to compromise their health and well-being.

Prolonged uncontrolled blood glucose levels can lead to a myriad of serious health complications, including blindness, kidney failure, cardiovascular disease, and increased susceptibility to infections. Removing access to the most advanced technology available only exacerbates the risk of these complications and puts unnecessary pressure and cost to the public healthcare system.

Not to mention the exorbitant waste of taxpayers money to decommission the current pumps in use! We estimate 13 million and that’s definitely a conservative estimate.

We implore Pharmac to reconsider its decision and restore funding for the Medtronic insulin pump G4 closed loop system. Ensuring continued access to this vital technology is not just a matter of convenience; it is a matter of life and health for countless individuals across the country.
