Parking changes will free up spaces around North Shore Hospital

Publish Date : 14 Dec 2018

To make it easier to find a car park around North Shore Hospital, Auckland Transport will introduce a mix of paid, P120 and unrestricted spaces.

By mid-2019 paid parking at $1 per hour from 8am-6pm, Monday-Friday, with no time restrictions will be brought in to Shea Terrace, Mary Poynton Crescent and Northcote Road.

P120 parking will be introduced on sections of Brook Street, Thornton Road, Kowhai Street, Lake View Road, Lake Pupuke Drive, Rangitira Avenue and Ngaio Street, from 8am-6pm, Monday-Friday, with large sections of each street remaining unrestricted.

Making it easier to find a place to park

AT's Parking Services and Compliance Manager, John Strawbridge, says this mix of paid, time-restricted and unrestricted parking will help to free up spaces, making it easier for people to find a place to park, while still providing longer-term parking for those who need it.

"Residents, local workers and visitors to the area are all competing for a limited number of spaces. We carried out a parking survey which showed between 92 per cent and 100 per cent of the parking spaces on the streets close to the North Shore Hospital are occupied during peak times. For parking to function correctly, it should be at around 85 per cent occupied, this way the space is being used, but there is still room for those who need it.

"We've deliberately left as much unrestricted parking as possible. On Thornton Road and Lake Pupuke Drive, for example, around two-thirds of the parking spaces will remain unrestricted."

Mr Strawbridge says the changes will encourage more people to use public transport which has improved dramatically since the new bus network was launched on the North Shore in September.
