The food scraps collection service is coming soon!

Publish Date : 29 Jul 2022

Did you know that food scraps make up nearly half the weight of an average household’s rubbish?

Using food scrap bins to collect this material means we can process it in an environmentally friendly way, reducing emissions and waste going to landfill.

Weekly food scraps collections are already happening in urban Papakura and some streets of the North Shore. We are now ready to roll this service out to most mainland urban residential households across Auckland. We will be starting with west Auckland and the North Shore in the first half of 2023.

If you live in these areas, your household will receive;

  • a 23-litre food scraps bin
  • a 6-litre kitchen caddy
  • and a set of compostable caddy liners to help you get started.

If you already compost at home, you can still use the food scraps collection for meat and bones, or things your worms won’t eat like onion skins, seafood shells and citrus peel.

Most properties across the region will be receiving this service by the end of 2023. If the service starts for your property before July 2023, you will see a partial charge for ‘Waste Management – Food Scraps Service’ in your 2022/2023 rates bill. You will only be charged for the months you receive the food scraps service.

This new service gives Aucklanders a chance to contribute to achieving zero waste as well as playing their part in addressing climate change.
