Get into the festive spirit with these Christmas flicks!

Sure, Christmas in New Zealand is more about soaking up the sunshine, sand and sea rather than making snow angels, eggnog and dressing up warm. But that doesn’t mean we are exempt from snuggling up on the couch with a peppermint hot chocolate (or iced chocolate) and indulging in a Christmas movie or two. So, pour that buttery popcorn into a bowl, and jump onto the couch for a night of festive vibes. Our list of the best Christmas movies will cater for those who like a funny Christmas movie, a rom-com, or something to watch with the kids.

Teeming with those fuzzy rom-com moments and Christmas lights, this lighthearted film will help foster those good vibes that anticipate with the holiday season.

Dr Seuss’ The Grinch

However, he learns a valuable lesson and gets his heart changed by a young girl. This animated 2018 film adaptation of the classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Stars Benedict Cumberbatch. It’s a wonderful family-friendly movie to enjoy this season!

Candy Cane Lane

Eddie Murphy stars in this new Amazon original. The story follows Murphy’s character who embarks on a mission to win the neighbourhood’s competition for best-decorated house. This Christmas comedy is a great way to lift spirits this festive season!

EXmas

In this Christmas drama, Ali and Graham are ex-fiances. Ali misses Graham’s family more than she misses her ex and plans to spend the holidays with his parents. When Graham surprises his family at Christmas, he discovers his ex-fiance infiltrating his family home, spending time with his parents. The film transcends into a text of stubbornness, challenging who should stay or go.

Disney

Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas

Blending the spooky elements of Halloween with the motifs and patterns of Christmas festivities, this brilliant Tim Burton film follows the story of Jack Skellington. The king of Halloween Town kidnaps Santa Claus and schemes to deliver shrunken heads and a myriad of other ghoulish gifts to children on Christmas. But his girlfriend, Sally, tries to disrupt his plans. Thus stop-motion animation touches on themes that kids and adults alike will connect with. Its many layers and clever witted dialogue make it one of those films that you just must see!

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

On Christmas Eve, Clara discovers that her mother left her with an inheritance to a magical world of fairies and alive toy soldiers. Clara is in search of the key to this magical world so she can reach the fourth realm and restore stability to the land. This film has lighter Christmas tones and is infused with enchantment and wonder, perfect for a step into a world of charm and magic. Definitely worth a cosy watch.

Arthur Christmas

This story, equipped with its all star voice cast, follows the Claus family and their high-tech present delivery system. On the night before Christmas, Santa’s son, Arthur, discovers that, due to a technological malfunction, a little girl’s Christmas present has been lost. So, he sets out on a mission with the GrandSanta – who despises the modern present-delivery technology – to deliver the misplaced present to the little girl in just two hours. This is a gentle, funny, and kind-hearted film that the family will love, and it bears an important message.

Elf

Another Christmas classic, tElf, starring Will Ferrell, follows the story of Buddy, who was raised by and among Santa’s elves in the North Pole. While he spends his days as a toy-making elf, he can’t shake the gut feeling that he doesn’t belong. When he learns that he is not an elf, he travels to New York to search for his biological father. He certainly doesn’t expect to fall for a department store employee while he’s there.
