How to clean your gut -
Week 2. Waste build-up

Welcome to Week 2 of the Supercharge Your Gut, ‘Clean your gut’ 6-part series of blogs and social posts.

Week 2 looks at the undiscarded waste - the 500g to 3kg of undiscarded waste! - we can carry around in our digestive system.

The toothbrush analogy

You know that feeling when you miss brushing your teeth? That furriness of plaque build-up? Then the lovely feeling after brushing when your teeth are clean and smooth?

Well, it’s similar to your gut. Waste, bacteria and plaque can build up over time if it’s not regularly and gently cleaned and ‘brushed’. To make matters worse, the many kinks and turns in your intestines is a haven for tough-to-remove waste build-up.

But when it’s clean! Yes! You feel lighter. You get more energy as nutrients are better absorbed and dispersed. Your skin is more hydrated as water is also better absorbed. It’s all good news with a clean digestive system.

The build-up

With our rushed lifestyles and food choices it’s no surprise our bodies don’t always function at their tip top. This certainly applies to our gut. It’s, of course, where all our food and liquid goes.

A primed gut will disperse the nutrient and dispose of the by-product - waste. However, for many of us, our gut isn’t firing on all cylinders. This can lead to waste accumulating in our digestive system.

Lee Holmes, clinical nutritionist

Lee Holmes, clinical nutritionist, author and founder of Supercharged Food says, “Our guts are quite amazing. Very hardworking yet fine tuned enough to directly interact with our vital organs including our brains.

However, research shows that 500g to 3kg of waste can be in the digestive system, dramatically affecting its ability to process nutrients and dispose of waste. It’s a drag on the system.

My approach is to very gently and quite slowly clean the gut with diet, hydration, supplements and exercise. I don’t recommend harsh and fast ‘cleanses’. They can do more harm than good. It’s always a good policy to take things with your body at their own pace.”

Waste not

As Lee points out, the goal is to slowly but surely start dislodging the waste and disposing of it the natural way (through regular bowel movements).

(In some rare cases this can lead to a detox response which is often akin to caffeine withdrawals. If this happens, drinking more water is a good idea. As always, see a healthcare practitioner if symptoms persist).
