Background

NZTA Wellington Transport Alliance is undertaking major rehabilitation and reconstruction work on State Highway 2, Chapel Street, Masterton from late April 2024.

The first section of the road to be reconstructed is between Jackson Street and Lincoln Road roundabout. The second section is between Michael Street and Russell Street. A majority of the works will happen at night, but some work will be 24/7 to avoid longer disruption to the community. Because the works are so extensive, it will mean that one side of the road will be closed day and night until we complete one side, and then the other side of the road will be closed day and night. The works will have access and noise impacts for some residents and businesses.

These sections of the road are in poor condition and have reached the end of their life, so it’s important for the safety of everyone who uses the road that this work is undertaken. The road must be excavated to a depth of around 400mm with a new structural asphalt base laid.

Once completed, these works will significantly enhance the strength of State Highway 2 Chapel Street, making it more resilient to potholes and traffic damage. This will not only improve the road's lifespan but also enhance the overall safety of all road users.

Roadworks schedule

It is expected that the schedule for the works will be as follows, however work is weather dependent which can alter the schedule.

Between Jackson Street and Lincoln Road roundabout

From Sunday 28 April 2024 to approximately Wednesday 8 May 2024, work will be carried out between Jackson Street and Lincoln Road roundabout. For this section of the road, we will be carrying out construction work, day and night. Construction happens Sunday nights through until Friday afternoon. No works will be carried out Friday night through until Sunday evening.

One side of the road will be closed at all times, so vehicles will need to use the detour route down Dixon Street. Heavy vehicles will need to use the Ngaumutawa Road detour.

Between Michael and Russell Streets

Once the Jackon Street – Lincoln Road roundabout works are complete, work will begin between Michael and Russel Streets, approximately 5 May 2024. For this section of the road, we will be carrying out construction work at night only at this stage, Sunday to Thursday nights. Work won’t be done on Friday nights through until Sunday evening. One side of the road will be closed at all times, so vehicles will need to use the detour route down Dixon Street. Heavy vehicles will need to use the Ngaumutawa Road detour.

There is a chance this could change to day and night works to speed things up and avoid a longer period of disruption. We will advise any updates closer to the time.

Access for residents and businesses during the road works

While crews are working on the two sections of road, which will be one side of the road at a time, there will be access issues by vehicle for some residents and businesses who are within the work area. It is expected that access by vehicle will be unavailable for up to 4 days for some residents and businesses. Those directly affected have been communicated with directly.

Residents and businesses will have pedestrian access at all times to their property while vehicle access is not available.

Some carparks along Chapel Street will be unavailable while construction is happening, but public carparks down the side streets are still available.

In non-work sections, access may be permitted. Traffic controllers will be on duty to assist, so please talk to them and discuss where you need to go.

Please contact us on customer@wta.nzta.govt.nz with any questions.

We appreciate that roadworks are inconvenient for neighbours but will do our best to minimise this for residents and businesses.

Thank you in advance for your patience during the works on this major road through your town.
