Floral Carpet Festival 2024
The annual SPiCE Floral Carpet Festival took place on 9th March this year. Thousands of brightly coloured marigolds were used to create a stunning community artwork in Sandringham Reserve. The wonderful dancers from Tapasya School of Dance performed for us and talented art students from Mount Albert Grammar School offered beautiful henna art. Afterwards, we shared samosas in the sunshine. We are so lucky to have such a richly diverse community here in Sandringham.
Friday Nights with SPiCE
Our 2024 Summer series of "Friday Night with SPiCE" events were a resounding success. We had the most amazing local musicians performing, talented poets and fabulous children's entertainers as well as a wonderful community ukulele session. The sun shone for every event while we kicked back and enjoyed summer nights in the village.
We can't wait to organise some more - follow us on Facebook or Instagram for all the details of upcoming events.

Ōwairaka/Te Ahi-kā-a-Rakataura/Mt Albert - Hikoi and Pakiwaitara o te Maunga
In March, SPiCE organised a hikoi around our local Maunga, Ōwairaka, to learn more about te taiao, and hear pūrakau/stories from Iwi about Ōwairaka.
Guided by Pandy and Nick Hawke (Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei) we heard the story of Wairaka and other stories from the maunga.
Afterwards, we took part in an art activity using the natural resources found on our hikoi and finished with shared kai and kōrero under the trees.
A huge thank you to Pandy and Nick for their wonderful stories and to our wonderful community for coming along and sharing this special day.

New Street Banners Brighten Up The Village!
In December SPiCE unveiled vibrant new street banners in the village. Designed by artists Shannon Novak and Karel Wohlnick the banners reflect the vibrant community of Sandringham and our pride in where we live. We got a great response from the local community - if you have any feedback or ideas for art projects in the village - get in touch! We'd love to hear from you. Email angela@spice.org.nz
Rongoā Hikoi and Rakāu print workshop
Inspired by our 'Welcome to Ngā Ana Wai' poster competition, SPiCE supported a wonderful hīkoi around Gribblehirst Lava Rock Forest guided by Lisa from Nature's Fold. Lisa showed us how to identify native trees and plants and explained how they were used in Rongoā (traditional Māori medicine.) We observed the making of probiotic tea following tikanga and shared kai and kōrero afterwards in Gribblehirst Hub.
We then took part in a Rākau (plant) print making workshop using natural pigments, led by mixed media artist Cathy King.
The event was well attended and we received fantastic feedback so look out for more events like this in the future.
