Why this petition matters

Started by Patsy Hood

TiGa Minerals and Metals (formerly Barrytown JV Limited) a majority Australian owned mining company have  a proposal to establish a Mineral Sands Industry for an up to 50 year operation. They have been granted mining permits covering approximately 70% of the Barrytown Flats. The land is on the Coast Road tourist drive (State Highway 6), between Greymouth and Punakaiki.

The impact on this beautiful coastline and those who live there and for tourism is also monumental. The Coast Road has been named by Lonely Planet as one of the top 10 coastal drives.

The plan includes up to 350 trucks per week along this road. This equates to a truck every 15 minutes with trucking proposed between the hours of 5am to 10pm – representing safety issues for road users and threats to the endemic Westland Petrel/Taiko that only breed near Punakaiki, the village famous for its unique limestone pancake rocks. The application says material would be processed at the site 24 hours a day and is adjacent or near to habitats for many other vulnerable and threatened species as well as waterways and coastal lagoons.

Please sign and support this petition to oppose this heinous proposal and protect this special and beautiful coastline and to help protect this special part of Aotearoa.
